For example, in the index you can find the word 'Greece' and it will have the page number of every entry that mentions Greece, which for someone who studies religion, is very helpful. Coming from someone who rarely spends more than a couple dollars on a book the price tag on this book was quite high, though I do feel I got my moneys worth.
